Vegetarians are everyday people who for one reason or another
have decided to give up meat, fish and poultry. The term "vegetarian"
comes from the Latin "vegetus" for "active, vigorous."
Vegetarianism is not a new idea, having been around thousands of years
since the days of Plato and Socrates. Neither is it a kooky fringe thing;
many well-known athletes, actors, and other famous people practice a vegetarian
lifestyle. Most vegetarians came to the lifestyle because of health concerns.
Various religious principles of living embrace many of the concepts vegetarians
espouse today. Vegetarianism is more logical because it is planet-friendly.
What types of vegetarians are there? There are several types, because
vegetarians, like other people, have different opinions about things.
Some people practice vegetarianism for health, others because it is humane,
and some are raised as vegetarians.
Vegetarian terms:
Vegan (pronounced "vee-gun") is a vegetarian who eats no
meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, or other animal products. This is the
strictest vegetarian.
Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry, but do use dairy
products and eggs.
